Giovanni Reyna. The American Dream. Gio Dream. The 18-year-old is the hottest player in American soccer and is being tipped to become perhaps the best American player ever. He burst onto the scene in January 2020 when he overtook Christian Pulisic as the youngest American ever to play in the Bundesliga (17 years and 66 days old). Gio later became the youngest American ever to play in the Champions League, providing the assist for Erling Haaland’s game winner against PSG. With his talent fully on display over the past 12 months, his star is on the rise as well as his prospects in the burgeoning soccer card market.
Given the increase of soccer card collectors, hobbyists and investors is expected to come from the United States, American players like Gio, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie merit particular attention. As we were writing this, it came to our attention that in late December 2020, Topps released a special 10-card BvB Set just for Gio. The folks at Topps are no idiots. They have seen the rise of the young American midfielder and his performances since the start of the Bundesliga season and decided to flood the market with rookie cards (with the official “RC” trademark) even though he is technically no longer in his rookie season. Perhaps the increase in the resale market over the past six months also influenced that decision, as 2019-2020 Bundesliga hobby boxes have more than doubled in price since June 2020 from around $500-600 to nearly $1,200-1,500.
Gio’s future is bright and his talent unquestioned. If he continues to perform at the very top level alongside Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, he may eventually move on to an even bigger stage. Now is the time to take advantage.
